How can women negotiate their salary effectively without getting a negative feedback?
Despite being a vital part of the existing workforce, Women mostly are paid unequally in the existing marketplace. Several market studies highlight the gap between salary packages offered to both the genders. However, this difference in the pay cheque could be surpassed during the salary negotiations with a potential employer.
What we as a woman lack is effective salary negotiation skills. Most of the time we fail to understand that ability to negotiate successfully has more positive effects.
1. Decision of Negotiation
Firstly, it’s important to set your mind right. It’s important to know your value and value your knowledge. Company pay a candidate on the basis of their skills, knowledge and expectations. Hence, inspite being grateful to the existing job offers, value your skills and accept what you deserve.
2. Know Your Worth
Be well-prepared before negotiating. Know what you are worth and know what the market demands are for a respective job position. According to ‘Women Don’t Ask’ survey report, women salary expectation is 3 to 32% lower than that compared to men for same job position.
3. Don’t Be Pessimistic
If you start salary negotiation with a negative mindset, you will not be able to get the outcome. Even if you feel that success is set at its lowest mark, go ahead with an optimistic attitude. Optimism and confidence will help you achieve what you desire. However, never forget to complete your background check.
4. Collaborative Approach
The key is to approach your negotiations in a collaborative manner and explain how the value you are asking for is going to benefit both the parties. Instead of giving it a competitive outlook, be more acceptant and approachable.
5. Negotiate as a Women
Negotiation in a competitive and aggressive framework could provide a negative outlook to the employer. Be firm for your terms but keeping it gentle, social and friendlier. A friendly attitude will increase your chances.
