Engineering – On the Rise
Engineering is more than handling
machines. To get an extra edge over the rest, its important have more than mere
domain skills. Soft Skills play an important role in differentiating top-notch
STEM professionals for employment and development.
India is a land of engineers.
Hundreds of public and private educational institutions produce minimum 6 Lakh
engineering graduates per year, making India the largest producer of
engineering workforce. Yet only 18% of the workforce are market ready. Indian
engineers are great in domain skills but lack some of the important soft-skill,
hence loses their competitive edge in present global market.
Having said that,
industrialization have resulted in the rapid demand of civil engineers for
heavy industries including mechanical engineers. Currently, civil and
mechanical are top two sought after engineering career in India with a constant
rate of approx. 10%. Thousands of companies produce hundreds of mechanical engineering jobs in India for freshers and
experienced professionals.
Despite having such huge
employment opportunity, our country is not able to lessen the gap between
demand and supply of skilled engineering workforce. One major ability that our
engineers lack are the soft skills.
Below mentioned are the five soft skills that every Indian Engineer need:
1. Communication
In a recent soft skill survey, communication in
English became a major drawback of the engineering workforce in India. Only 18%
of the total passout candidates were eligible for the software market. It was a
shocking revelation that most of the Indian engineers lack ‘reading, writing
and speaking’ skill when it comes to English.

field in particular, it’s must to have effective communication skill to achieve
the success. Lack in communication can also result in 30-50% cut down in the
overall salary package.

days.

team. It is this ability of adequate collaboration with his team that is going

people successfully by interaction and convincing power that make a candidate
unique and high in demand. Leadership is certainly a key soft skill for STEM
professionals who want to make a difference.
