Electrical engineering became popular in late 19th century, soon after the commercialization of telegraph machines, telephones, and electric power generation plus distribution. Increased usage of electrical machines and electricity, gave birth to a complete new engineering field aka ‘Electrical Engineering’. Further subdivided into numerous subfields such as electronics, digital computers, power engineering, telecommunications, control systems, radio-frequency engineering, signal processing, instrumentation, microelectronics etc., Electrical Engineering mainly deals with all the components of electricity.

What Do They Do?

An electrical engineer mainly deals with the designing, construction and maintenance of electrical systems, machinery and equipment. They are responsible for implementing electrical components in devices that work on electrical mechanisms. These professionals participate in the designing and development of electrical products of all shapes and sizes.

How to become an Electrical Engineer?

Academic Qualification

Every professional electrical engineer needs to have at least a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. A degree from reputed institution is a must for career advancements.

Degrees being offered are:
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering
  • Bachelor of Engineering in electrical engineering
  • Master of Science in Electrical Engineering
  •  Master of Engineering in electrical engineering
  • Doctorate of Philosophy in Electrical Engineering
One needs to score well in engineering entrance tests in order to secure their admission in an reputed engineering college.

Skill Needed

An electrical engineer needs to have good knowledge of science and math. Having good computer skills is a bonus point. In current engineering industry, one needs to focus more on soft skill enhancements such as communication, leadership, team management, creativity etc.  As an engineer it’s important to have good problem solving and analytical skills.

Career Outlook



As per Bureau of Labor Statistics around 174,000 electrical engineering jobs were available till 2012 with an expected annual job growth of 5% (for the 2012-22 fiscal decade). As of 2012, average annual salary of an electrical engineer was approximately US$ 91,810.

In India, electrical engineering has witnessed a constant increase in the demand ratio. Today, both public and private sector demand for more skilled electrical engineering professionals. Increase in the power generation and usage have accelerated the job growth, especially in this field. Hundreds of large, medium and small scale companies create thousands of electrical jobs for fresher within the country.

In India, average annual salary of an electrical engineer ranges between INR 3 Lakh to INR 8 Lakh.
